#Letters to the Editor — June 19, 2021

The Issue: Parents in Queens who feel forced to pull their kids out of endlessly failing city public schools.

We have tried with no success to improve our public schools for decades — mostly by pouring more and more money into the system (“Demanding Schools That Work,” Editorial, June 16).

What is “the system”? Who is in charge of these terribly failing schools?

I think everybody knows the cause of the problem, but nobody has the courage to face it: What motivation do teachers have to do a good job? Absolutely none.

Automatic salary increases, fantastic benefits and practically no accountability is the real problem. To help our kids, we must have great school choice.

As much as the Department of Education and the United Federation of Teachers have behaved abysmally the last year or so, it’s still hard to hold them totally responsible for the performance of some students.

What happens when the child goes home? Is there supervision to make sure homework and studying are paramount to any other after-school activities? Teachers shouldn’t have to explain the importance of education and of behaving in accordance with school rules. Parents should do that.

Unfortunately, in some areas, it seems impossible or highly frowned upon to suspend or expel unruly or violent students. This has a huge impact on the majority of children who are there to learn.

Who is to blame for the education crisis? To start, the court decisions that gave students rights that ended discipline in the classroom.

The next culprits are universities that churn out teachers who have little or no knowledge of the subjects they’re to teach, and the unionization of teachers.

Finally, and probably most important, there are the public-education gurus who deemed that learning should be fun, not hard, followed by those who decided that “self-esteem” is more important than correct answers.

There are two simple steps that don’t cost any money that our mayor could take to drastically improve the performance of city schools.

The first is to allow schools to expel badly behaved children who disrupt classes. The second is to have schools teach reading, writing and arithmetic to our children instead of teaching them they are oppressed or oppressors.

Unfortunately, our mayor made it harder to suspend class disrupters and supports indoctrination instead of education in our schools.

The Issue: President Biden signing into law the establishment of Juneteenth as a national holiday.

Juneteenth will be the 11th federal holiday (“Juneteenth ‘liberation,’ ” 18). Bravo. It’s about time.

This day will be commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

My grandfather fought in the Civil War and, according to my father, strongly believed that we are all created equal and deserve the rights of all men. As such, I thank President Biden and Congress for this holiday.

Slavery in the United States was not officially abolished until the 13th Amendment was finally ratified by the states on Dec. 6, 1865, a full half year after Juneteenth.

That date would be more appropriate for a national holiday celebrating the end of slavery.
