“Just waking back up from my pregame nap to see about The Washington Football Team??? (crying laughing emojis),” James said Thursday on Twitter. “Is that real?? No Way! Oh man they had a thorough intense long board meeting about that one huh.”
His mockery came soon after the NFL’s Washington franchise changed their name to The Washington Football Team, reportedly as a placeholder for the duration of the 2020 season.
Even Nets forward and D.C. native Kevin Durant wasn’t impressed with the name, responding to James’ tweet with a GIF of an eye roll. James then continued his playful trolling by responding to KD, “Yo I was going to check on you but figured you didn’t wanna be bothered at the moment,” ending the tweet with a flurry of crying-laughing emojis.
Being a Dallas Cowboys fan, James has a reputation of bashing the Washington franchise. When the Cleveland Cavaliers were in town to take on the Washington Wizards in 2016, James was asked about Washington hosting a playoff matchup with the Green Bay Packers.
“Go Aaron Rodgers,” James responded.
The Lakers are scheduled to play their first scrimmage in the Orlando bubble Thursday against the Dallas Mavericks.
The four-time MVP further emphasized that regardless of Washington’s temporary name, he is getting ready for their matchup.
“Now time to begin prepping for my night out of the town aka the Stage!,” he said.
