#Knicks, new coach could get ‘Delete 8’ minicamp after all

A one-week minicamp for teams in the so-called “Delete 8,” which includes the Knicks, is likely to happen in mid-August, according to an NBA source.

Perhaps by then the Knicks will have a head coach to run it.

There also could be an additional two-week group event with the eight clubs not invited to the Orlando restart, staged in one city, according to The Charlotte Observer.

A bubble in Chicago was proposed last month for the Delete 8, but it could take place in another venue.

The Post reported last month the players association was reluctant to stage team minicamps in their own facilities because of fear of the coronavirus spreading without the proper safety protocols found in the Orlando, where the league will try to restart the season next week in a bubble-like atmosphere. The Post also reported the minicamps would be voluntary — which likely would still be the case.

The union still is concerned about the health risk, but the Orlando bubble has proven a success to date.

Charlotte has been one of the most avid supporters of minicamps or OTAs (organized training activities). Knicks president Leon Rose wants it, too, but is against having scrimmages against other teams.

“We need the door flung open, so we can get after this thing,” Hornets coach James Borrego said of OTAs.

The Knicks would love a chance to work with their young players. They believe it’s unfair that 22 teams are staging nearly three weeks of practices and eight more regular season games without giving them some format with which to work with their own team.

Last month, the NBA staged a preliminary conference call with team GMs about a Chicago bubble in September. Knicks GM Scott Perry skipped the call because he was involved in Jason Kidd’s second head-coaching interview.

The Knicks haven’t had a coach to comment on the situation. However, Rose is expected to end a seven-week search and make a decision next week — in time to run the OTAs.

Contract parameters have been discussed with their first choice Tom Thibodeau but no agreement yet has been reached, leaving the door ajar for incumbent Mike Miller, Kidd and former Nets coach Kenny Atkinson.

Miller still is in contact with players, according to a source, and has one year left on his contract. Owner James Dolan already is paying all of Miller’s assistants for next season and, of course, the rest of David Fizdale’s $22 million — fully guaranteed — after Fizdale was fired in December, 22 games into his second season as Knicks coach.
