#Kevin Durant’s thigh injury is minor

The Nets received bad news Tuesday regarding James Harden’s hamstring rehab, but at least Kevin Durant’s recovery from a thigh contusion appears to be going much better.

A source confirmed that Durant’s injury is considered minor enough that it didn’t require him to return to Brooklyn. He’s still with the Nets on their three-game road trip, which continued with Tuesday’s 134-129 win at New Orleans, and a second source familiar with the situation classified it as minor.

“I think Kevin’s is more positive [than Harden’s]. I think he’s had a scan and it’s more of a day-to-day thing. We’ll see if it’s in the next few days or more,” Nets coach Steve Nash said. “But that scan was not alarming or negative in that respect. So we’re hopeful he can be back soon.”

Durant is averaging 27.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.2 assists this season. He’s shooting 54.3 percent overall, 46.2 percent from deep and 87 percent from the stripe in an uber-efficient campaign.

The 32-year-old lasted just four minutes in Sunday’s loss at Miami, a setback that predictably had Nets fans concerned, considering Durant’s injury history. Durant missed 18 months with a ruptured Achilles tendon. He then sat 23 straight games this season with a hamstring injury, not returning until April 7.

The Nets also played Tuesday without Tyler Johnson (knee), Chris Chiozza (hand) and Spencer Dinwiddie (ACL), while young bigs Nic Claxton and Reggie Perry sat out for health and safety protocols.

That left the Nets with just nine players versus the Pelicans, so they may have to reconsider their policy against using Irving and Blake Griffin on back-to-backs. The Nets play Wednesday against the Raptors in Tampa, Fla.

“There is a chance Blake could play back-to-back. We’ll see how it goes and make those decisions [Wednesday],” Nash said. “But it’s tricky. It’s a tricky stretch for us here, you know? We’re getting very close to the playoffs, we’re dealing with many different kind of physical ailments on different fronts.“And so, navigating the schedule is going to be as important as our performances in some respects. So very difficult stretch for us coming up here and we’ve just got to stay positive, chip away, try to get better and also not allow guys to be overexposed, and succumb to unnecessary injuries.”

Health and safety protocols have been NBA shorthand for COVID-19 issues — sometimes positive tests, but more often contact-tracing quarantine. Nash offered no information on the details of Claxton’s and Perry’s status.

“I just know that they’re in the protocol,” Nash said. “Not sure how long that’s gonna last or what that entails, the testing, or to test out of that, or what it is right now.“I think it’s still pretty early to understand exactly what we’re dealing with but for tonight, they’re both in the protocol and unavailable.”
