#Jets report card: It wasn’t total failure

Grading the Jets after their 18-10 loss to the Bills on Sunday.

Offense

It looked good for a little while. The Jets moved the ball in the first half, gaining 186 yards and scoring 10 points. Then … the offense vanished. They had 4 yards in the second half and were shut out. They had no answers for the Bills’ blitzes. Sam Darnold (12 of 23, 120 yards, 2 INT, 31.1 rating) was sacked six times as the offensive line looked lost. The Jets had no completions that counted to a tight end in the game. Dowell Loggains’ play-calling did not look much better than Adam Gase’s

Grade: F

Defense

The Jets gave up a lot of yardage (422) but held the Bills to six field goals as they played bend-but-don’t-break defense. Bills QB Josh Allen (30 of 43, 307 yards, 90 rating, 11 rushes, 61 yards) coughed up the ball in the red zone on a Tarell Basham sack. WR Cole Beasley (11 catches, 112 yards) killed the Jets. It wasn’t great, but it was a much better effort by the unit. You can’t pin this one on the defense.

Special Teams

Braden Mann had a few bad punts. He averaged 42 yards per on four punts. The coverage teams were poor. Bills kick returner Andre Roberts had a 58-yard return out of halftime and averaged 40 yards per kick return and 7.7 on punt returns. Backup kicker Sergio Castillo made his one field-goal attempt.

Grade: C

Coaching

Give Gase credit for trying something by turning over the play-calling duties to Loggains. But it didn’t work. The Jets looked like they had no idea what to do against the Bills’ blitzes in the second half. They made no adjustments to the Bills’ adjustment. Gregg Williams called a good game and his unit held firm in the red zone.

Grade: C-
