#Joe Flacco is blowing his big Jets chance

#Joe Flacco is blowing his big Jets chance

Joe Flacco, for all he’s accomplished in his decorated NFL career, is watching his chances to again become a regular starter in the league slowly and agonizingly vanish with each time he plays.

The 35-year-old backup to Jets starter Sam Darnold is now 0-4 in his four starts this season, after Sunday’s 34-28 loss to the Chargers in Los Angeles.

Flacco, playing with Darnold out with a shoulder injury, didn’t lose the game for the Jets — their 10th defeat in 10 games this season. There were plenty of culprits, including a defense that failed to pressure Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert or cover the receivers he was throwing to.

But Flacco’s first pass attempt of the day, intended for Jamison Crowder, was as much a momentum-changer as any play in the game — a 6-yard pick-six to L.A.’s Tevaughn Campbell with 3:24 remaining in the first quarter.

“It wasn’t the right decision,’’ Jets coach Adam Gase said of the Flacco gaffe.

“The interception I threw was really bad,’’ Flacco said. “I threw it behind Crowder. It was just a simple drag slant, and I threw it flat-footed and threw it way behind Crowder. It was really just a bad physical throw.’’

The Jets were in the midst of a spirited start to the game. Henry Anderson had blocked a punt on the Chargers’ first possession, which led to a La’Mical Perine rushing TD. Jets safety Marcus Maye had just forced a Keenan Allen fumble at the LA 4-yard line, giving the Jets the ball.

Enter Flacco, who lobbed is first pass of the game with no juice on it in the direction of Crowder. Campbell read the play perfectly, undercut the route, picked the ball off and walked into the end zone to give the Chargers a 7-6 lead.

It was an inexcusable mistake on the part of a 35-year-old former Super Bowl MVP.

Flacco, one of the best deep-ball passers in the game during his career, inexplicably never threw the ball down the field to his best playmakers — rookie Denzel Mims, deep-threat Breshad Perriman and Crowder in that opening half.

None of the three, who starred in the Jets’ previous game, a 30-27 loss to the Patriots, caught a single pass in the first half.

“I don’t even know if we realized that,’’ Flacco said. “I know I didn’t realize that specific stat. In the second half, we made the decision to kind of attack them.’’

Too little too late.

“That was obviously not planned,’’ Gase said. “There were some plays that were called for those guys, and the ball just didn’t go there. There were a couple times where [Flacco] was pressured or the coverages dictated for us to check the ball down.’’

The Jets are now 0-10 in the past three seasons with a backup playing in place of an injured Darnold. Flacco, who was brought to the Jets to right those wrongs, has his name on the last four of those losses. That hardly bodes well for him realizing his goal to become a starter again beyond this season, when he becomes a free agent again.

“I’m not really thinking about what comes in the future,’’ Flacco said. “I’m trying to play the best football I can play and help our team win. A lot of those decisions are not made by myself anyway. But I’m going to keep my head down and play the best football that I can play. Who knows where that takes me?’’
