Douglas backed the beleaguered coach during his session with reporters. Gase has presided over this 0-8 season and his offense is currently dead last in the NFL for the second straight year.
“This is not all on Adam,” Douglas said. “I have to do a better job of surrounding him with better players and better weapons. We’re in this together. I’m going through and thinking of everything I can do to try to help Adam. The goal is to get this fixed together.”
It should be kept in mind that Douglas is in an impossible position answering questions about Gase publicly. He is not going to rip the head coach of the team, who is his equal in the organization. Remember that Douglas and Gase both report to ownership. Gase does not work for Douglas and Douglas is not the one who will be making the decision whether or when to fire Gase.
“The hope is that we can fix these problems together and be here together for a while,” Douglas said.
He was asked if he believes Gase is part of the solution and said, “Yes.”
The Jets did not make any more trades before Tuesday’s deadline. They had moved Steve McLendon, Avery Williamson and Jordan Willis in recent weeks, but there was no action Tuesday.
Douglas shot down a report that said the team was shopping tight end Chris Herndon.
“We were not shopping Chris,” Douglas said. “We received no calls on Chris. I think there was some misinformation out there on that.”
Douglas also said there was no truth to reports the team was looking to deal DT Quinnen Williams.
“I think there were a couple of wrong reports on what we would entertain for Quinnen,” Douglas said. “I was able to have really positive conversations with both him and his agent and just clarify that we were not shopping Quinnen and what our vision for Quinnen was.”
Douglas said Williams is a key piece of the team.
“My position on Quinnen is Quinnen plays a premium position on the D line,” Douglas said. “I said earlier offensive and defensive line matter. It’s the foundation of what we want to be. He’s an interior pass rusher that I think has gotten better every week and he’s not a good person, he’s a great person. I think the focus is to keep as many of those people around as possible.”
Douglas said he believes the Jets’ offense has shown improvement in recent weeks, pointing to their play in the first half against both the Bills and Chiefs. The offense fell apart in the second half in those games.
“I think the last two weeks we’ve been able to put good halves together,” Douglas said. “We just need to turn those halves into games.”
