One that teams are dealing with is what happens if there is an outbreak of the virus at one position. Quarterback would be the most troublesome position to have that happen. One solution the Jets have discussed is having one quarterback in quarantine.
“We’ve talked about that quite a bit,” coach Adam Gase said on Tuesday. “We’re still trying to work through some of these things that will pop up and the best avenue to take. Once you start sticking traveling in there in the regular season, especially with us having some West Coast trips, we do have to keep talking through these types of things and figure out what the best thing to do if something happened that we’d have a really good answer for it. The good thing now is we do have time.”
The Jets have a few weeks before practices begin and still have six weeks before the season is scheduled to start.
The Jets have four quarterbacks on their roster: Sam Darnold, Joe Flacco, David Fales and rookie James Morgan. One of them might find himself quarantined.
The Jets had one player opt out of the 2020 season on Tuesday and two were placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Offensive lineman Leo Koloamatangi, who did not get into a game last season, is the first Jets player to opt out due to fears about the coronavirus. Players have until early next week to make their decision.
In addition, the Jets placed two rookies on the reserve/COVID-19 list. CB Bryce Hall, their fifth-round pick, and DB Shyheim Carter both were listed. The list does not mean they tested positive for the virus. It is also for players who have been in contact with someone who has the virus. They can be activated when healthy.
Gase said team CEO Christopher Johnson has been calling every player on the roster since the news came out last week about allegations of racist and sexist comments by his brother, Woody, who is the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. Gase said Christopher called him when the reports came out to assure him they were untrue. … Darnold said Tuesday was his first day inside the Jets training center. He was part of the early group of players who were tested for the virus starting on Friday. Players must have three negative tests before they are allowed inside the team’s building. Most players underwent their first tests on Tuesday.
