#Jets can’t afford loss against depleted Broncos

A must-win game on the first day of October might sound silly, but the Jets are 0-3, their coach is on the hot seat and their schedule is brutal. All of that makes Thursday night’s game against the 0-3 Broncos at MetLife Stadium as must-win as it gets.

Adam Gase cannot afford another loss, particularly one to a team playing its third-string quarterback making his first NFL start. Gase’s future with the Jets is murky at best. A loss to the Broncos could lead to an in-season coaching change.

“It’s something, I can’t focus on that,” Gase said of his job security. “It’s wasted energy for me. It’s not going to help me at all. All I can do is make sure I get our guys in the right headspace to go out there on Thursday and play well. … If I waste my energy on anything else, it’s just counterproductive to what we’re trying to do.”

The Jets have been abysmal in their first three games. They are the only team in the NFL that has yet to hold a lead. They have been outscored by 57 points. The offense is the worst in the NFL and has scored only four touchdowns. The defense is leaky in coverage and applies very little pressure on the quarterback.

The Jets look like the worst team in football. The Broncos are right there with them, though. This should be a more accurate barometer for where the Jets are than games against the Bills, 49ers and Colts, who are all potential playoff teams.

“I expect two teams to play extremely hard and battle to try to get a W,” Gase said. “That’s really, at the end of the day, what we’re all trying to do. This early in the season, guys are just trying to do everything they can to win a game. And both sides are trying to get as many healthy guys out there, especially on a short week because the more guys you have available to you, the better it is. You can rotate guys in, you can try to play more guys and you just try to get guys going out there and seeing if somebody can bring some juice and create a big play or get a turnover. You’re just looking for that spark early that really gets you going.”
