#Jets’ C.J. Mosley explains why he opted out of 2020 NFL season

August 4, 2020 | 12:53pm

Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley called his decision to opt out of the 2020 season “probably the biggest football decision I’ve made in a long time.”

Mosley made his first comments since opting out during a Facebook Live event Monday to help raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. The 28-year-old informed the Jets on Saturday that he would sit out the season due to concerns about COVID-19. Mosley cited having a young son at home during the Facebook Live event.

“That’s probably the biggest football decision I’ve made in a long time, probably since I picked what college I’m going to,” Mosley said. “That’s a book I got to start writing pretty soon. What’s the next step? Because there’s a lot of negative things people been saying as far as me not playing two years. And there’s a lot of positive things that are being said.

“I’m out all year so I have all this time to mentally get better, to physically get better, kind of readjust and kind of find that flame again.”

Mosley signed a five-year, $85 million deal with the Jets in 2019. He missed all but two games in his first season with the team after suffering a groin injury. Now, he won’t play his third game with the team until 2021. He was scheduled to make $16 million this year. He received a $10 million signing bonus in March. His $6 million salary for 2020 will now move to next year. His contract now runs through 2024 instead of 2023.

Mosley reported to Florham Park for training camp and spent a little more than a week there, but then decided he was uncomfortable playing this season.

“Because of COVID, my family is my support system with my son. I didn’t want to risk that obviously,” Mosley said. “Just looking at the big picture, for me, I want to make sure I’m mentally and physically the best person I can be so I can be that leader I know I can be.”

Many players around the league are making the same decision as Mosley. Players have until Thursday to opt out of the season.

“It’s a full-team sport,” Mosley said. “Sometimes people got to better on their own. We’re in a different situation, but I’ve got to look out for my family. Sometimes you got to make that small sacrifice. That’s something you might not understand right now but when you come out on top everybody’s going to be on your side cheering for you.”
