The Takumi Kitamura (Tonkatsu DJ Agetaro)-starring live-action film adaptation of Ken Wakui’s Tokyo Revengers manga was released in 350 theaters in Japan on July 9, 2021, and earned 528 million yen (4.78 million USD) on 386,000 admissions on its first Saturday and Sunday, which was enought to become the top-grossing film of the weekend and to beat the two mega-budget Hollywood films, Godzilla vs. Kong in second and Black Widow in third.
According to the film’s official Twitter, its weekend gross and tickets sales were the highet for a live-action film released in Japan this year so far, surpassing the previous record marked by Godzilla vs. Kong. The 120-minute film earned 696,434,440 yen (6.3 million USD) on 511,145 admissions in its first three days, and is expected to reach the two billion yen mark by the end of its domestic run.
Coming in fourth was the live-action film adaptation of Mayu Murata’s popular shoujo manga Honey Lemon Soda, which earned 174 million yen (1.57 million USD) on 135,000 admissions. The boy idol group Snow Man’s 17-year-old member Raul is cast as its male protagonist Kai Miura, along with 21-year-old Ai Yoshikawa as its main heroine Uka Ishimori.
While its theatrical run in Japan is scheduled to end on July 21, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time ranked fifth, one position up from the previous weekend, in its 18th weekend. The film’s total box office gross has finally reached 9.997 billion yen (90.29 million USD) on 6.54 million admissions in 126 days since its release in Japan on March 8, 2021. It will be reported in a day or two that the film has passed the 10 billion yen mark.
The first part of the trilogy anime film project Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway ranked ninth in its fifth weekend. Meanwhile, The Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by Light, the latest and final installment of the anime franchise inspired by Nakaba Suzuki’s The Seven Deadly Sins manga series, dropped to tenth from its opening weekend’s third.
The Detective Conan anime franchise’s 24th feature film Meitantei Conan: Hiiro no Dangan / Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet finally disappeared from the box office top 10 in its 13th weekend. Its total gross in Japan has reached 7.3 billion yen (65 million USD) with 5.24 million ticket sales.
