Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahou no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: A Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night), the second anime feature film inspired by Japanese stationery company San-X’s popular mascot character brand Sumikko Gurashi, still earned an impressive 154 million yen (1.35 million USD) on 125,000 admissions in its second weekend, which was down only 27 percent from its first weekend gross.
The 65-minute film, directed by Takahiro Omori (Natsume Yujin-choseries), became the No.1 film of the weekend for November 13-14, beating the latest MCU film Eternals that made its No.1 debut last weekend. Considering that Eternals (343) was shown in almost twice as many theaters as Sumikko Gurashi (184), this is an amazing result. The film has a cumulative total of 380,000 ticket sales and 469 million yen (4.1 million USD) in box office gross. It has been a faster pace than the first film Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tobidasu Ehon to Himitsu no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: A Popping Picture Book and A Secret Child), which was a smash hit with final gross of 1.5 billion yen (13.14 million USD) in 2019.
Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night, the first anime feature film based on the reboot series that retells the first arc of the original Sword Art Online novel series, moved up one spot to fourth in its third weekend. Its cumulative box office gross has reached 900 million yen (7.88 million USD) and is expected to surpass the one billion yen mark by the end of next weekend.
The live-action feature film adaptation of Fumi Yoshinaga (Antique Bakery, Ooku: The Inner Chambers)’s Kinou Nani Tabeta? / What Did You Eat Yesterday? manga fell to fifth in its second weekend with 106 million yen (928,610 USD) on 73,000 admissions. The 120-minute film has earned 710 million yen (6.22 million USD) so far.
Eiga Tropical-Rouge! Precure Yuki no Princess to Kiseki no Yubiwa! (Tropical-Rouge! Precure The Movie: The Snow Princess and the Miracle Ring) was still in seventh place, the same as last weekend. The 30th Precure feature film has made 440 million yen (3.85 million USD) from its domestic run.
