#Japan Box Office: Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Shares No.1 with Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway

After disappearing from the top 10 last week, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, the fourth and final installment in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy film series, returned to the top spot in the two-day weekend box office top 10 in its 14th weekend, which was the first time in nine weeks.

Thanks to the various efforts to promote the last run, such as the official 36-page bonus booklet “EVA-EXTRA-EXTRA,” the new version EVANGELION:3.0+1.01, and the first-ever Dolby Cinema screening in the Eva anime franchise, the film earned an impressive 265,876,900 yen (2.41 million USD) on 169,000 admissions in the two-day weekend of June 12-13, which recorded an astounding 939.8% attendance and 960.5% box-office revenue compared to the previous weekend. Its total domestic gross has reached 8965306780 yen (81.42 million USD) with 5,867,510 admissions in 98 days since its release.

Meanwhile, the first part of the trilogy anime film project Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway was finally released in Japan on June 11, 2021, after several postponements. While making its third-place debut in the two-day weekend box office ranking, the 95-minute film earned 523,943,800 yen (4.76 million USD) on 259,074 admissions in its first three days including Friday, becoming the top-grossing film of the three-day weekend box office ranking of June 11-13. The final box office result of the film may reach the highest of the franchise, surpassing the current record of 2.3 billion yen (20 million USD) marked by Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space in 1982.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning, the second and final part of the two-part “Final Chapter” series inspired by Nobuhiro Watsuki’s action jidaigeki manga, down one position to second and earned 245,000,000 yen (2.2 million USD) on 167,000 admissions in its second weekend, which was 33% down from its opening weekend. The film has surpassed the one billion yen mark.

In its ninth weekend, the Detective Conan anime franchise’s 24th feature film Meitantei Conan: Hiiro no Dangan / Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet ranked sixth, three positions down from the previous weekend. The film’s total box office gross finally reached 6.93 billion yen (62.95 million USD) to become the third top-grossing film in the Conan anime franchise, surpassing the 21st film The Crimson Love Letter‘s domestic gross of 6.89 billion yen (63 million USD).
