#Japan Box Office: BELLE Climbs Up to 2nd Place Beating My Hero Academia’s 3rd Film

While Fast & Furious 9 (Japanese title: Wild Speed Jet Break) kept its top position in its second weekend, Mamoru Hosoda’s Ryu to Sobakasu no Hime / BELLE climbed up to second from last week’s third, beating My Hero Academia THE MOVIE: World Heroes Mission. 

BELLE had kept its strong momentum even in its fifth weekend, earning 242 million yen (2.21 million USD) on 169,000 admissions, which was a surprising 104 percent of last weekend’s box office gross. Its total gross has already reached 4.7 billion yen (43 million USD) on 3.41 million admissions, making it the director’s second top-grossing film, surpassing Wolf Children (2012 /4.22 billion yen).

Meanwhile, the second weekend gross of My Hero Academia THE MOVIE: World Heroes Mission, the third feature film in the My Hero Academia anime franchise, was 221 million yen (2.02 million USD) on 163,000 admissions, which was a huge 52 percent down from its opening weekend. The film has earned 1.6 billion yen (14.64 million USD) in total so far, and is expected to be top-grossing film in the MHA anime franchise soon, surpassing the second film My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising (2019 / 1.79 billion yen).

The live-action film adaptation of Ken Wakui’s Tokyo Revengers manga ranked the same fifth in its sixth weekend. Its total domestic gross has reached 3.59 billion yen (32.85 million USD) on 2.70 million admissions, making it the star Takumi Kitamura’s highest-grossing film in his acting career. His previous film Tonkatsu DJ Agetaro, also based on a popular Japanese manga, was a box-office bomb that only made 200 million yen (1.83 million USD) from its total domestic run in 2020.

Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – Grand Temple of Time: Solomon, the latest anime film adaptation of the Fate/Grand Order smartphone game, disappeared from the top 10 in its third weekend, but its total domestic gross had reached 280 million yen (2.56 million USD), which was 60 million yen more than the total gross of the anime series’ previous film Fate/Grand Order Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot Wandering; Agateram released in May 2021.
