#Gov. Murphy: Giants, Jets won’t have to quarantine before training camp

Giants and Jets players traveling to New Jersey won’t be subject to the state’s new rule, requiring visitors from certain states with large numbers of COVID-19 cases to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said NFL players would qualify under the “carve-out for essential travel,” with team training camps scheduled to begin July 28.

“Without having put this in stone, I’m sure we’d probably want to do one, and more than one, test for the virus when they got here,” Murphy said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “Or ask them to take it as they’re leaving wherever their host state is. That’s the minimum standard. We – along with New York and Connecticut – have asked folks if they’re coming from a hotspot state to self-quarantine for 14 days and get tested. A 14-day quarantine doesn’t work in an NFL schedule. So, at least the testing piece would have to be there, and I think if anyone is symptomatic or they’ve tested positive already, I’d hope they wouldn’t get on the plane.”

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office told the NFL Network players who not have to arrive 14 days early for training camp to quarantine to be tested upon arrival and not do anything until their results come back. It’s something New York is working with New Jersey and Connecticut.

Murphy said the decision regarding whether to allow any fans to attend games will be based on discussions between the NFL and the state’s health officials.

“It’d be all of us that would need to be involved because this is a public health matter,” Murphy said. “So we couldn’t put people in close contact with each other, unless we thought that was a responsible step to take. So we’re on the phones. That’s really the big nut that we still have yet to crack, I would say, in whether they go the European soccer route where they’re playing the games with no fans, or whether or not there’s some amount of fans you can have in there. That’s a decision we have to make together.”
