#Jadeveon Clowney’s simmering free agency: Titans ‘good fit,’ $15 million Browns possibility

An AFC South suitor could be emerging for top remaining free agent Jadeveon Clowney.

Titans general manager Jon Robinson revealed on Thursday that he has been monitoring the situation with the 27-year-old former No. 1 overall pick, who remains unsigned despite having received multiple offers.

“No conversations of recent,” Robinson said during a Zoom conference call. “I think we’re going to continue to monitor it and see.

“I know he wants to play. I think we would be a pretty good fit for him. There was some mutual interest there when we started the discussions, but I would say that really hasn’t grown legs since we spoke last.”

Tennessee isn’t the only team in the hunt for Clowney, as the Cleveland Browns are willing to give him a one-year, $15 million deal, according to The MMQB. The Browns made an offer in May for Pro Bowler who recorded three sacks, 21 tackles and four forced fumbles in 13 games last year for the Seahawks, but Clowney rejected it.

“Obviously, he has been a really good player in this league, a great pass rusher when he was in Houston in Seattle,’’ Browns defensive coordinator Joe Woods said in a recent Zoom call. “Just really affects the game.’’

Clowney is seeking a massive payday on the magnitude of deals elite defensive ends DeMarcus Lawrence and Khalil Mack received in 2019 and 2018, respectively. Lawrence, 28, signed a five-year, $105 million contract and Mack, 29, signed a six-year, $141 million contract. Thus far, however, the three-time Pro Bowler’s campaign for $21 million per year has been in vain. Early in free agency, the Seahawks reportedly offered him $17 million per year to return for a second year and the Dolphins reportedly offered him $18.5 million per year.

Clowney’s sticker price and lingering health issues — the most recent of which, a sports hernia, required surgery in February — are likely contributing factors to his unsuccessful free agency. The edge rusher claims to be healthy now, though teams have been unable to verify that with the coronavirus shuttering NFL facilities and subsequent physicals. The South Carolina product has been hampered by injuries since his NCAA career and has played a full 16-game season just once since entering the league in 2014.

“I don’t know if people think I’m hurt because of what I went through because of the core or because of previous years,” he said in May. “I’m ready, I’ll be ready to go whenever the time comes. Whoever I sign with will get the best version of me.”

The Giants and Jets have both been discussed as potential — albeit unlikely — landing spots, along with the Eagles and Browns, who “haven’t given up on the idea of landing him,” according to Cleveland.com, in spite of Clowney’s earlier snub.
