The Ivy League is cancelling all fall sports, including football, with the conference again potentially foreshadowing a nationwide shut down of college athletics. Winter Ivy League sports, including basketball, won’t begin until Jan. 1, if at all.

In March, the Ivy League was first to make the unprecedented decision to cancel its conference basketball tournaments. Every league soon followed, leading to the first-ever cancellation of the NCAA Tournament. It is currently unclear whether the Ivy League will attempt to move football and other fall sports to the spring, which FBS officials have largely deemed a last resort.

Though the Ivy League was prescient in its decision to cancel all athletic events in March, major college football programs are less likely to follow its lead this time. Given the financial standing of Ivy League members and the relatively small stature of their football teams, potentially losing an entire season wouldn’t be devastating for the schools. However, several large FBS programs stand to lose several tens of millions of dollars if the football season is lost.
