“INTERVIEW: Amelia Watson Talks About the Ways VTubing Connects Us All”

This interview is part of our series of articles and interviews with hololive VTubers IRyS and the members of  -Myth-! This series includes interviews and recommendation lists from some of the world's most well known VTubers. You can read Amelia Watson's Top 10 Anime list here.

When VTubers first hit the scene, I was immediately enamored as my love for anime aesthetics merged with online content creators to form a futuristic blend of entertainment I didn’t know had been missing from my life. hololive has been at the forefront of this new venture, and talents like Amelia Watson had me hooked. Her authentic (though sometimes chaotic) personality and a commitment to surprise her audience with new formats from her YouTube streams to virtual tours on TikTok of her 5-gallon saltwater tank makes you keep coming back for more.

We had the opportunity to speak with Amelia Watson about her career as a VTuber, how she develops her unique content ideas, and her latest updates on the cases that hololive’s #1 time-traveling detective has been cracking open.

Crunchyroll: For anyone who is still unfamiliar, can you introduce yourself and hololive production in general to our readers?

Amelia Watson: Hello! VTubing detective at your service, nice to meet you! In between investigations, I like to wind down by streaming games and throwing controllers!

Can you describe the average day in the life of hololive production’s #1 Time-Traveling Detective?

Ame: Wake up at 2:30pm, stream, eat, do some work, then go back to sleep! All while caring for the wonderful pets that keep me company

What’s the biggest mystery you’ve uncovered so far during your time at hololive production? Any ongoing investigations that you can share with us?

Ame: The biggest mystery is still yet unsolved. A mysterious hole (in Minecraft) which has taken many lives in the hololive English Minecraft server. If anyone has any evidence pertaining to the suspects, please contact me.

How did it feel to be chosen to join the line-up of hololive English -Myth-?

Ame: I feel really lucky to have been chosen, most people in the West were only just starting to pay attention to VTubing at the time, so to be there right at the height of all the hype feels really special. Although initially, I was just really happy to be given an opportunity to shine, and I still am!

Now, it's been nearly 2 years since you first made your debut. How has your life changed since joining hololive production?

Ame: Well, I went from living in a hot cramped room with noisy family, to now relaxing in my own streamer office! Other than that though, I definitely feel more confident in myself as a content creator and in general, but I still feel like I've got a long way to go. Having the support of so many people online took a while to get used to as well!

Your fans (aka Teamates) have affectionately adopted saying “HIC” in the chat whenever you hiccup. Did you ever expect these things about yourself to be highlighted in such a way?

Ame: HIC's are something I've had to live with for a while, so it was sort of expected that people might notice!

Your dog Bubba has gotten his own merch and has even been included in some of your outfits.  Was it important to you from the start that Bubba be a part of your career, whether it be as a mascot or a companion? Please let Bubba know he’s a very good boy.

Ame: Bubba is happy!!!! I knew that Bubba would be heard in the background of streams, and that people would ask "WHO'S THAT?" especially since I started streaming from a small space. Bubba was not initially intended to be part of my motif, but luckily, he fit in so well, that he has since become iconic! I love him so much and his imagery being as popular as it is, means a lot to me (And Bubba I'm sure…if he knew!)

You’ve done a variety of unique streams from testing out various Watson Concoctions on your viewers to more recently owning and operating a doctor’s office. What is your creative process for coming up with fresh, new ideas?

Ame: Oh, thank you! Hmm, I don't really have a method of coming up with ideas, but I've found it really useful to have dabbled in all sorts of hobbies over the years, picking up niche skills that have become pretty relevant in the VTubing "field". Mostly, I just do what I think would be fun for the viewers (and me!) while trying to put a fresh spin on things!

What other kinds of streams do you want to try out but haven’t had the opportunity for yet?

Ame: Augmented Reality seems like it's just around the corner! I get excited thinking of ways to implement content creation and experiment in that area, also.

What’s one of your favorite memories from streaming so far and why is it when you gave yourself and Gawr Gura feet? (Also, any plans on bringing back The Fish Tank podcast?)

Ame: Hahaha, the podcast gets asked about a lot, it almost feels like it was TOO good, how can we live up to it again??? A lot of collabs do come to mind, and some sweet gaming feats as well, (for best memories while streaming so far!)

Ame and Gura's infamous foot reveal

What has been the most surprising or difficult aspect of streaming?

Ame: Juggling the audience's expectations. It seems easy, just play a game and make cute noises, right? Well obviously, we do more than that! And I am human … but I'll keep trying my best, no matter the setbacks!

What has been the most rewarding thing about streaming?

Ame: My own happiness, and seeing other people's (if applicable) And of course the sweet cash money (to invest into even cooler projects!)

You’ve branched out into releasing songs as well (such as your cover of Deck the Halls). Can we expect to hear more from you?

Ame: Yes…soooon

In your debut stream, you sang “Puru Puru Pururin” from the anime Welcome to the NHK, and I need you to know you have objectively correct anime taste. What inspired you to choose this as your first karaoke track?

Ame: It was really just a song I knew and was slightly obsessed with for a while after watching the anime, it would get stuck in my head a lot and it's very cute!

You recently joined TikTok making corporate-mandated content. How do you hope to reach fans differently on that platform that you can’t through just streaming? (Blink twice if you’re being forced to do this.)

Ame: Haha! I think making short form content on TikTok can probably reach a new audience, especially when it’s not just your run-of-the-mill VTubing activities, so that's mainly my goal!

You’ve revealed that you’ve endured many surprising injuries growing up, including nearly biting off your tongue. I found this quite relatable as, when I was a kid, I nearly lost half of my left index finger. Do you still find yourself in dangerous situations or have you since overcome the odds?

Ame: Oof, that sounds painful! I do feel like I've overcome the odds, but going out and living can just put you in pretty "dangerous" situations in general (especially with my luck), so I prefer staying extra prepared and vigilant!

What do you think it is about VTubers that connects with people in a special way?

Ame: VTubing is like a gray area between a fantastical character, and a real person that has their own flaws and appeals. I think the dichotomy between the two creates this mysterious draw for a lot of people, and of course helps us perform as well! With how things are now, it can feel difficult to connect with others at times, so having this unique form of interactable entertainment can be a good outlet for that, even if at times a little addictive … everyone, remember to go touch grass occasionally! (or keep some in a little jar on your desk)

Is there anything upcoming in your plans (or for hololive production in general) you can reveal to us?

Ame: Something tasty is on the horizon…

Before we wrap up, is there anything else you want to say to your fans or fans of hololive production in general?

Ame: Thank you for the HUGE amount you've shown us the last 2 years! Being a part of hololive production, I feel like I'm part of a sports team or big family, and it makes me happy to see you support the others too! So even if you aren't a Teamate, thank you!
