A man was caught on surveillance camera dumping piles of US mail in a California parking lot, according to news reports.

The footage shows an unidentified man pulling bag after bag of mail out of the back of a Budget rental truck under the cover of night and leaving it in a pile at the edge of the lot, CNN said in a report Tuesday.

“It was completely unusual,” Lilia Serobian, who owns 7Q Spa Laser & Aesthetics, which owns the lot, told the network. “It’s suspicious. You start thinking, ‘OK, something is going on,’ because no one has access to all those boxes and packages.”

The video of the Sept. 3 mail dump, which was also aired by KTLA-TV, is one of two piles of dumped mail found in the California city that day.

The first call came in around 8 a.m. from postal officials saying that “possible stolen mail or whatever was dumped in an alley,” Glendale police Sgt. Christian Hauptmann told the Los Angeles Times.

Two hours later, cops got the call about the pile of mail from the caught-on-camera dump in the spa parking lot.

Omar Gonzalez, western regional coordinator for the American Postal Workers Union, told CNN the culprit isn’t a postal employee but a contractor — and said the US Postal Service isn’t talking.

“We wanted to make sure it wasn’t a bargaining employee,” Gonzalez said. “We talked to the Glendale supervisor and the Glendale manager and asked from where the contractors would have received the bags. That’s when they responded, telling us the union should not speak about it.”

He said companies that ship in bulk are typically given bags with the USPS logo to deliver the mail to the post office. But it’s unclear if the dumped mail was on the way to the post office or being shipped out.

“If it’s outgoing, we don’t know how it got into the Budget truck,” Gonzalez said.

He said the Glendale Police Department and the local postal service are investigating.

The postal service told the LA Times that it “does not comment on any ongoing investigations.”

The discarded mail was collected and will be sorted and delivered, according to WPMI-TV.
