It’s so bad that the MTA board felt obliged to formally ban public defecation in the subway and bus system.

Rules already stated that riders who “create a nuisance, hazard or unsanitary condition (including, but not limited to, spitting or urinating)” are subject to a $100 fine. But the agency felt it had to “enhance clarity” with “more descriptive language,” MTA flack Tim Minton explained.

The MTA actually “clarified” things in its April emergency rules, as the pandemic brought a plague of dysfunctional behavior by many homeless folks. At the same time, it banned “any wheeled cart greater than 30 inches in either length or width” and spending more than an hour in a station.

Plainly, even with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s nightly subway shutdowns to evict the homeless from the system, things are bad enough that the board felt compelled to spell out the sanitary requirement.

Consider it the ultimate #deBlasiosNewYork moment.
