Chromebooks are great for simplicity, but that also means their features are a bit limited. Not all video calling services support Chrome OS. But one that works really well on Chromebooks is Google Duo. We’ll show you how it works.

Google actually has two video calling services: Meet and Duo. Google Meet is geared more toward work-related conference calls, while Duo is intended for personal use. Both work well on Chromebooks, but we’ll be talking about Duo.

There are two ways that you can use Google Duo on a Chromebook. First, you can simply use the duo.google.com website in the Chrome browser. This method also works on non-Chromebook computers. The second method is the Duo Android app. We’ll be covering both in this guide.

If you don’t want to download any extra apps, Google Duo on the web is the easiest method for Chromebooks. All you need is a web browser, which is easy to find on a Chromebook.

This method involves simply visiting the Duo website and signing in to your account. You’ll need your phone handy to verify your phone number. Follow our dedicated guide for using Google Duo on the web to learn more.

Google Duo Android App

If you prefer a native app experience, many Chromebooks have access to the Google Play Store. This means that you can download the same Google Duo app that works on Android smartphones and tablets. You might be more familiar with this interface.

First, open the Google Play Store from the app drawer.

open the google play store

Next, search for “Google Duo” and click “Install.”

Search for "Google Duo" and then click the "Install" button

Once the installation is complete, click “Open” to launch the app.

Before proceeding, you’ll be asked to grant Duo a few permissions. These include:

  • Access Contacts
  • Take Pictures and Record Videos
  • Record Audio

Click “Allow” for all three to continue.

You’ll automatically be signed in with the Google account associated with your Chromebook profile (shown at the bottom of the screen). If that’s the account that you want to use, you’re done!

You'll be logged into your default Google account, as seen at the bottom of the Duo app window

However, if this isn’t the account that you want to use with Duo, you can sign out from the settings. Click the three-dot menu icon in the search bar and select “Settings.”

From there, choose “Account” from the top of the Settings.

Select your Google account

Click “Sign Out of Duo on This Device.”

Click the "Sign Out of Duo on this Chromebook" option

Confirm that you want to log out from the pop-up message by clicking the “Sign Out” button.
