#How to Make a Workplace as Clean and Hygienic as Possible

Workplace hygiene is closely connected to employee satisfaction, productivity, and motivation. So, we can say that a clean and hygienic workplace and a company’s growth go hand in hand.

Most office workers spend most of their days in an office. This is one of the biggest reasons companies should invest in workplace hygiene and maintenance.

Not only will this increase their employees’ productivity and motivation, but it will also reduce the number of sick days and cut down the costs of medical expenses.

In this article, we’ll discuss all the ways you can maintain hygiene and cleanliness in the workplace.

Implement a hygiene policy

The best way to ensure that a workplace is a clean and hygienic place is by implementing a hygiene policy. A written rule that will inform all employees on how to keep their work environment clean and healthy.

Enforcing a good hygiene policy in the office will minimize the chances of germs and viruses spreading. And if all the employees respected these rules, the office space would be much safer.

Stock up on cleaning products

To show your employees that you’re taking the hygiene policy seriously, you should stock up on cleaning products. Make sure you place hand sanitizer around the office, and set up a cleaning schedule. Also, invest in cleaning different equipment such as mops, vacuum cleaners, clothes, and rags, and don’t forget to stock up on different cleaning products.

If you have an office kitchen, make sure that there aren’t piles of dirty dishes in the sink, and check the fridge regularly.

Set up a cleaning schedule

In addition to implementing a hygiene policy, you should also set up a regular cleaning schedule. Your employees’ job is to keep their working stations as clean as possible, but it’s not their responsibility to keep the entire office clean.

For that, you can hire a cleaning crew. If you hire professionals to regularly clean your office space, the office will never get so dirty that it needs deep cleaning. Regular cleaning is the best way to keep the office thoroughly clean and hygienic.

Keep the bathroom clean and sanitized

Every hygienic workplace needs a clean and sanitized bathroom. Office bathrooms are notorious for their lack of hygiene and bad smell. Using them can be very off-putting both to employees and clients.

That’s why regular cleaning and sanitization of office bathrooms is a must. In addition to regular maintenance, you should also make sure bathrooms are well-equipped with all the necessary items and gadgets.

Hand driers and sanitizers, soap dispensers, and toilet sanitizers. You can go a step further and invest in bidet attachments. These will minimize the use of toilet paper and improve employees’ personal hygiene.

Take out the rubbish daily

Regular rubbish disposal should be yet another rule included in the office hygiene policy. Rubbish should be disposed of daily and even multiple times a day if necessary.

Taking out the rubbish is one of the easiest ways to ensure hygiene and cleanliness in the workplace. If the rubbish sits around the office for days, it becomes a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, germs, and flies. In addition to that, rubbish that stays indoors for a long time will start spreading unpleasant odor.

Taking out the rubbish after the workday is over, is the best way to ensure your workspace is clean and pleasant to work in.

Reduce the workstation clutter

Cluttered and messy workstations are not only unsightly but are also difficult to work at. Messy desks also make the entire office look untidy and cluttered. That’s why, keeping the workstations clean and clutter-free should be one of the rules in the hygiene policy you implement in your office.

Each employee should be responsible for keeping their workstation/desk clean and tidy. To help them keep their workspaces clean, you could invest in trash bins, paper shredders, desk organizers, and other useful items.

Sort out the cables

In addition to looking super chaotic, messy cables are also perfect dust and germs storage. On top of that, messy cables are a hazard. You never know who might trip over them.

So, to minimize the chances of people tripping, and to ensure that your office space looks clean and tidy, you should find ways to sort out the cables. There are many useful tools that can help you with cable and cord management. For instance, you have cable clamps or tie mounts, cable trays, wire loom solutions, and so on.

These and many other cable management options can help you keep the cables and wires from showing and collecting dust. Less dust, a cleaner office environment, and fewer chances of employees developing allergies.

Promote and encourage employee hygiene

Making sure that all office personnel are trained in maintaining proper hygiene is crucial. Every employee should take hygiene seriously, and it should be everyone’s responsibility to keep the workspace clean and hygienic in some ways.

Also, ensure the employees know that their personal hygiene can affect others in the office as well. So, encourage regular handwashing, hand sanitizing, dressing properly, and so on. From soaps, and hand sanitizers to cleaning products, encourage employees to use these products to maintain their personal hygiene and their workstations clean.

Provide sick leave when necessary

If you want your employees to be motivated and productive during most of their working days, you will need to provide them with sick leave whenever that’s necessary.

There are companies where taking sick leave is very frowned upon. Those companies don’t seem to realize that giving their employees time off when they are sick is beneficial both for employees and the company.

A day off for a sick employee means that they will recover and get back to work faster. For the entire office, it means that there are fewer chances of the rest of the employees catching the bug. Additionally, some employees may be willing to work from home while on their sick leave, so productivity won’t be at risk.

Specify eating and smoking zones

Another good way to ensure the office space is clean is to separate and specify eating and smoking zones. Eating at the work desk should be strictly forbidden. Not only because it’s not hygienic but because it’s bad workplace etiquette.

Similarly, smoking in the office space should also be banned. There should be a separate space where smokers can go to take a break. Smoking in the office can pollute the air and the nicotine smell can get into the wall and furniture pores.

Bottom Line

A clean and hygienic workplace environment is crucial for productive and satisfied employees. In this day and age, that shouldn’t be difficult to achieve. Hopefully, these couple of tips will help you create such space in your office.
