Hovvdy, the Austin folk-rock duo of Charlie Martin and Will Taylor, scored their first bona fide indie hit record last year with their fourth album, October’s True Love. Today they’ve shared “Everything,” their first single since that project’s release.

The new song comes from True Love‘s studio sessions, but it’s more sonically similar to the band’s upbeat 2020 singles “Runner” and “I’m Sorry” than it is to the subdued, emotional cuts that comprise the 2021 LP. It’s a largely hopeful track about accepting past mistakes and living free of fear and guilt. But the band’s signature melancholy still leaks in at points: “Before the sun leaves / Go outside and dream / About the places that I’ve heard of / I won’t live to see,” Martin sings over a turn-of-the-millennium alt-rock drum machine, heavy acoustic strums, looped vocal harmonies, and a banjo that sneaks around the edges of the chords. “‘Everything’ is a song about having fun even when you miss the mark,” he explains.

The track comes with an abstract, collagic visual treatment directed by Boone Patrello. Watch the video and view Hovvdy’s upcoming tour dates below.
