Honda

Honda just unveiled its groundbreaking plan to build flying taxis, Avatar Robots, and VR-controlled moon rovers by 2030. We’re looking at an insane development here—the kind that could shape humanity in ways both positive and negative. But as I sit and wonder what the future holds, the implications of this technology … I keep getting distracted by Honda’s stupid animated robot concept video.

The Avatar Robot is a weird idea. Like, really weird. It’s basically a robot that you remote control while wearing a VR headset. Your face appears on the robot’s giant TV head, sort of like that episode of Bob’s Burgers, and you maneuver the robot to perform any number of tasks.

Honda spends a lot of time talking about the Avatar Robot’s “multi-fingered hands,” which … uh, have multiple fingers. They’re also dexterous like human hands and could contain sensors to detect chemicals or check a person’s pulse—if you didn’t guess it already, Honda’s goal is to turn on-site manual labor into remote work.

Okay, that’s enough talk. If you haven’t already, go ahead and watch the animated Avatar Robot concept video below. Keep an ear out for my favorite line—“MOON.”

I’m not sure how to describe this video. It opens with a real-world shot of a beach before entering an animated guy’s fake-world 3D office. The animated man puts on a pair of 3D goggles and transports into the body of an Avatar Robot on another continent. This robot displays a cute little video feed of our animated man, who is no longer wearing goggles, leading me to believe that his spirit has somehow infected the robot’s body.

When the man-turned-Avatar-Robot finishes fixing a round shiny thing, he shifts into reverse and wheels himself into a row of Avatar Robots (sort of like a sentient shopping cart). He then removes his goggles (in his human form) and has lunch with his family.

Then, his daughter Emma puts on a pair of goggles to enter the body of a moon rover. I’m not sure how many VR rovers Honda wants to put on the moon, but there must be a lot if the technology is available to elementary schoolers.

To wrap things up, an animated lady receives a medical emergency SOS on her transparent smartphone. She chooses to accept the request (it would be pretty messed up if she didn’t) and dons her goggles to enter the body of a medical Avatar Robot—a man has collapsed in a public space and needs assistance! This part kind of confuses me. Instead of helping the man, she just wheels up to him and calls an ambulance. If I were that guy, I’d be pretty pissed!

Hopefully I haven’t ruined your day with this mind-bending video. Unfortunately, this is your future. You’d better get used to it now.
