#Home Depot recalls more than 190K fans over blades flying off

A faulty ceiling fan sold by Home Depot has been recalled over blades that have been flying off, according to a new warning.

More than 190,000 of the fans made by Hampton Bay have been pulled from shelves after the Consumer Product Safety Commission received 47 reports of blades detaching.

At least two of the incidents involved a blade hitting consumers and four involved property damage, the agency said in a Dec. 23 recall notice, which warned consumers to “immediately stop using the fans.”

The agency did not elaborate on the severity of the consumer injuries.

The product in question is Hampton Bay’s 54-inch Mara indoor/outdoor ceiling fan, which is made exclusively for Home Depot and manufactured in China. It retails for $150.

“We’re committed to the safety and quality of our products so we contacted the Consumer Product Safety Commission and voluntarily recalled the product and stopped sales when we discovered the issue,” a Home Depot spokeswoman said in a statement.

She said about 80,000 of the 190,000 fans affected by the recall were sold to consumers.

The distributor of the product, King of Fans, said in a statement, “On behalf of King of Fans and Home Depot we apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you. We take pride in the quality of our products and the safety of our customers is our priority.”

King of Fans described the issues as an “isolated manufacturing defect” that involves a screw that was not “adequately secured.”

Consumers who notice “blade movement or uneven gaps between the blades and fan body” should contact King of Fans for a free replacement, the consumer agency said.
