“#’Home Alone’ house recreated in gingerbread for film’s 30th anniversary”
In the legendary words of the little blond boy who was accidentally left behind when his family went away for the holidays: “Guys, I’m eating junk and watching rubbish! You better come out and stop me!”
Celebrating three decades since Kevin McCallister’s family home first debuted on the big screen, an artist has re-created the house where the classic comedy “Home Alone” was filmed, down to the very inch — as a 5.57-foot edible gingerbread house.
From the Little Nero’s pizza delivery car to figures of Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin, and Harry and Marv, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, to the notorious Oh-Kay Plumbing & Heating van, no detail was left out.
Award-winning artist and cake designer Michelle Wibowo teamed up with Disney+ to re-create the film set using edible ingredients in honor of the movie’s 1990 release, according to Reuters.
Wibowo took on this project by studying the architecture and exterior design of the home. Then, she created several sketches to include all of the film’s best moments. She revealed that it took nearly 300 hours and a diligent process to produce the perfect “Home Alone” house.
“I jumped at the chance because it is one of my favorite Christmas movies,” Wibowo explained. “It doesn’t really feel like Christmas in our house until we have seen it at least twice! I had so much fun making it look festive, and I loved making those cheeky characters Kevin and burglars Harry and Marv.”
Superfans taking a closer look at the gingerbread creation will be able to spot Kevin’s treehouse, Buzz’s pet tarantula on Harry’s face, Kevin falling off his sled in the snow, the paint cans used to trip up the sticky bandits and even the broken statue that is continuously knocked down by all the cars. Wibowo’s creation also includes 63 trees, 33 windows, 14 pizza boxes and six lampposts.
“I hope everyone will enjoy spotting iconic details from the movie,” Wibowo added.
The “Home Alone” gingerbread house is expected to travel to Oak Centre for Children and Young People at the Royal Marsden hospital in Surrey, England. The festive scene will be on display for the young cancer patients.
The current owners of the iconic home, located in Winnetka, Illinois, have put up a fence around the house to keep prying eyes away. Trisha and Timothy Johnson purchased the home for a whopping $1.595 million in 2016, according to Cook County property records.
The film follows 8-year-old Kevin as he defends his home from burglars Harry and Marv after his family accidentally leaves him behind while they go on their Christmas vacation. The movie was such a hit, Disney produced two theatrical sequels and two more TV-movie iterations.
According to die-hard fans, the less said about Disney’s proposed reboot, the better.
