A 20-year-old man died hiking in Joshua Tree National Park in California as temperatures spiked to 120 degrees, officials said.

The man — who was not identified — fell unconscious around 7 p.m. Saturday in the Turkey Flats area, the National Park Service said.

His hiking companion called authorities and told them that the man was in need of “immediate aid.”

More than four hours later, search crews located the pair at the base of Pinto Mountain, the agency said.

Park staffers administered CPR to him but were unable to revive him.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has launched an investigation into his death.

His cause of death was not released, but he was hiking as the state grappled with a record-breaking heatwave.

Temperatures in the area spiked to approximately 120 degrees Saturday, officials said.

“Park officials advise exercising caution when hiking, and always carrying more water than you think you will need,” the National Park Service said in a statement.

“Hikers are encouraged to recreate early in the day and be vigilant in extreme heat conditions.”
