#High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 3: Is it renewed?

Following the season 2 finale this weekend, will there be a High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 3 at Disney+? There’s a reason for some lively debate, but in this piece we’ll pass along what we know.

Everything for now starts with the show’s official status — we don’t have any word on its long-term future. Does it feel likely to us that the series will come back for more? Sure.

For starters, High School Musical is one of Disney’s most-important brands that stems back to the original movies airing on Disney Channel. These made stars out of Zac Efron and a number of other performers, and ironically, the new version has already found itself a big name in Olivia Rodrigo. Over the past year she’s become an immensely successful recording artist, and we tend to think that the streaming service would want to capitalize on her popularity. Season 3 may not be a foregone conclusion, but it’d be a total shock if we don’t see more of it down the road.

If season 3 is renewed, our expectation is that it would launch at some point in 2022. With pandemic restrictions being less severe than what they were a year ago, we tend to think that everyone would have a slightly easier time in production.

As for whether there should be concerns that Rodrigo would leave the show, she previously told The Guardian that she’s committed to two more seasons. With that being said, it also sounds like she’s more intrigued about a future in music than staying on the show long-term:

“I think it’s really hard to split time between the [show and music] and there are very few artists who do that efficiently, because acting is based on being a good liar and presenting a version of yourself that’s believable, and being a songwriter is the complete opposite. It’s like, here are all of my deepest, darkest secrets and I want you to know me so personally.”

Ultimately, we’ll see what the future holds here for both HSMTMTS and Rodrigo as a part of it.
