#Henrik Lundqvist feeling strong after heart surgery

Henrik Lundqvist said he is feeling well a month after undergoing open heart surgery, which forced him to opt out of this NHL season and may mark the end of his Hall of Fame career.

“I was not sure what to expect the first month after surgery,” the former Rangers franchise goalie tweeted. “4 weeks today and I feel strong, both body and mind filled with positive energy. Recovery is going well.”

Lundqvist, who signed with the Capitals in the offseason, added in a video from a sidewalk in Manhattan: “I feel good, good energy, moving around. Hope you guys are well.”

Though it was previously undisclosed, Lundqvist has long had a heart condition that was monitored by the Rangers during his 15-year career in New York.

In December, following more tests, Lundqvist revealed the condition had worsened and required surgery. It was unclear whether Lundqvist underwent a physical before signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract with Washington.

The Rangers bought out the final year of his seven-year, $59 million pact — following the emergence of two younger, cheaper goaltenders in Igor Shesterkin and Alexandar Georgiev.

Lundqvist was set to back up Ilya Samsonov in Washington, where he hoped to win his first Stanley Cup.

Instead he was placed on long-term injured reserve. Though Lundqvist will make his full salary, the Capitals were granted salary cap relief, according to CapFriendly.com.

A five-time NHL All-Star and Olympic gold medalist with Sweden in 2006, Lundqvist went 459-310-96 with a 2.43 goals against average and .918 save percentage in 887 games with the Rangers. He is the franchise’s goalie leader in games, wins and shutouts (64).

Lundqvist led the Rangers to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014 before falling to the Kings in five games.
