#Health, scheme fit will be factors in key year for Henry Anderson

As the Jets get close to training camp, I am examining the roster and giving you my top 25 players. Each weekday, we will reveal another person on the list, leading right into camp. I am not including rookies on this list because I do not feel it is possible to fully evaluate them before they play a game.

No. 21: Henry Anderson

Last year’s ranking: No. 13

Position: DE

Age on Opening Day: 29

How acquired: Traded by the Colts on April 28, 2018 for a sixth-round pick.

Years left on contract: 2

2020 Salary Cap figure: $8.3 million

Looking back at 2019

Anderson was coming off a really nice 2018 season that earned him a contract extension from the Jets, but he took a step back in 2019. He just was not the same player last year. Much of that may be attributed to a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 5 against the Eagles, which caused him to miss three games.

You never know just much injuries affect guys, but it was clear Anderson was missing something from the year before. Adjusting to Gregg Williams’ system may have played a role in his slip in production, too.

Anderson ended up starting 13 games. He had just one sack after notching seven in 2018. His tackles for loss dropped from seven to three and his quarterback hits fell from 16 to nine.

PFF graded him the 100th defensive interior lineman out of 118 graded.

Outlook for 2020

Anderson will be a big part of the Jets defensive line again. Williams has shown he likes a rotation on the line, so Anderson won’t be getting 90 percent of the snaps. But he will probably be a starter, and should be a major contributor.

The Jets need to hope Anderson is healthy and ready to return to the form he showed in 2018, when he was a nice surprise for the team.

Anderson has no guaranteed money left on his contract after this season, so the Jets could move on after this season if his play slips again.

The defensive line is one of the Jets’ strongest units and Anderson should be a big part of that group if he can stay healthy.
