“It takes place very much in the universe that the video games created, but it’s a TV show,” Schreiber previously told Entertainment Weekly, explaining the link to the games from the show. “We get to expand that universe and create stories in it. There’s going to be some new characters that are introduced, there’s going to be a lot of familiar characters that everyone will know from the game.”

Halo has long been one of the most popular franchises in gaming, and there have been efforts for many years to get a live-action movie or TV series off the ground. The success of video game-based projects in recent years may have contributed to similar titles moving along more quickly in development. The 2020 release of Sonic the Hedgehog was a smash hit and there has been a lot of news about other new projects based on video games getting green lights.

On the Nintendo side of things, Mario and his pals are heading back to the big screen this year for an animated Super Mario Bros. movie. Featuring an all-star cast, which includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, the film will hit theaters in December. The last Mario movie was infamously detested by fans and critics alike but the video game movie boom has even convinced Nintendo to get back into the fray.

A big-budget series based on Sony’s The Last of Us is also in development at HBO. That show stars Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) in the lead roles of Joel and Ellie, a pair of survivors traveling across a post-apocalyptic wasteland filled with mutants and raiders. Sony is also bringing Twisted Metal to life with a planned TV series adaptation. Of course, they’ll soon be releasing a feature film based on one of their most popular titles with Uncharted hitting theaters next month.

Halo will premiere on Paramount+ on March 24, 2022.
