The quirky show following tech employee and family girl Zoey (Jane Levy) sees her magically transformed after a routine medical test goes awry. Able to hear people’s inner thoughts through song, Zoey’s been given a gift that also serves as an occasional curse when she hears things that she wishes she could block out.
But apart from the surreal aspects of this sweet show, Zoey’s torn between her best friend Max (Skylar Astin) and kindred coworker Simon (John Clarence Stewart). While she seemed to have made her decision by Season 1’s end, we’re taking a look at the reasons why Zoey chose right by sticking with Max.

Okay, pretty much everyone on this show sings, but Max’s feelings for Zoey are so earnest and pure that it’s difficult to not fall for the lovesick man. Whether it’s his pilot performance of “I Think I Love You” or future numbers like “Sucker,” his clear devotion to Zoey is enough to sell us on their friendship turning into a full-on romance, even when she was unsure.

Being There for Zoey’s Dad
After a tiff at work, Max comes to make amends by visiting Zoey at her family’s house where he asks to see her dad. This exchange at the beginning of the season showed just how close Max was with Zoey and her family, proving that their ties run deeper and longer than her newer connection with Simon.

Silly Songs
When Zoey’s powers experience a glitch in which she sings out loud to everyone else, at a very inopportune time, Max joins her. While in a presentation for their boss Joan and the company’s Mark Zuckerberg-eseque head honcho, Max sings and dances so Zoey isn’t the only one looking silly. If that’s not love, we don’t know what is.

The Knight in a Shining Suit
While attending Simon’s engagement party, his fiancee Jessica (India de Beaufort) accuses him of having relations with Zoey. Caught in a awkward situation, Zoey’s night gets even worse when she learns her father had a fall while being cared for by a friend. Max takes charge in the situation, leading his friend out of the party and accompanying her to the hospital. His determination to help Zoey, no matter the situation, is further evidence why his presence in her life is needed.

Accepting New Friends
Despite being Zoey’s closest friend at the beginning of the series, Max is more than willing to make room for more friends in her life, including neighbor Mo (Alex Newell). And not only does Max welcome others like Mo, he makes conversation, listens to others’ problems and makes friends out of his friend’s friends. What’s not to like?

Mind Control
When Zoey finally gives Max a romantic chance, she gets frustrated by his inability to contain music from his mind. Even though controlling his emotions is nearly impossible, he was able to switch songs when she explained the issue with his inner monologue being too romantic with the song “All of Me.”

The Funeral
Ever the supportive man, Max sticks by Zoey’s side for her father’s funeral, offering a comforting shoulder to lean on when needed. Only time will tell if their connection will continue to grow in Season 2, but considering how they left things, we think Team Zoey-Max has a promising shot.
