Grey’s Anatomy will return for Season 17 this fall on ABC

Despite Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 being cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ABC has confirmed Season 17 will premiere in the fall like usual. This is great news for fans who were concerned the historic 17th season wouldn’t premiere until 2021 due to production shutdowns.

And for those who are fans of Grey’s crossing over with Station 19, the spinoff’s fourth season will also make its anticipated debut this fall as well in the 8 p.m. ET time slot before we check in to Grey Sloan Memorial on Thursday nights.

The first few episodes of Season 17 will hopefully fill us in on what was planned for the original Season 16 finale. Based on where we left off, plus the events of Station 19‘s finale, it seems like we may have missed out on a few key developments.

One of the major storylines that was left open-ended involved the state of Andrew DeLuca’s mental health as he showed signs of bipolar depression, something he likely inherited from his father. We were also in the middle of Richard Webber’s health crisis and how that was going to affect his failing marriage with Catherine Fox.

We also missed out on learning what Amelia and Link decided to name their baby boy, while Teddy was stuck choosing between Owen and Tom. There were also rumors of another doctor being killed off in the explosive finale, but we were just left to wonder who’s been spared for now.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 talks have begun

While we can rejoice that Grey’s will return this fall, the question still remains whether Season 17 will be the last. The hit medical drama was renewed for a two-season pickup following Season 15, but not much else has been said since.

That was until lately when talks of a Season 18 came up in wake of the writers getting started on the next batch of episodes. While speaking to Deadline, ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke stated that, “We are in conversations now with the producers.”

As much as I would love for Grey’s Anatomy to go on for years and years, I do feel like the end is near. With Station 19 having a successful Season 3, I’m optimistic that the spinoff will be fully equipped to take the reigns in the next year or two.
