#Grant Wahl’s brother’s Instagram private after ‘killed’ post

“Grant Wahl’s brother’s Instagram private after ‘killed’ post”

Grant Wahl’s brother used Instagram to proclaim someone “killed” the prominent soccer writer at the World Cup — but now the stunning social media post is no longer public.

Wahl, 49, who had complained about a “death rattle cough” from bronchitis this week and said he was rundown, suddenly collapsed while covering Argentina’s quarter-final win against the Netherlands Friday.

In the moments before he collapsed, Wahl seemed in good spirits and was joking with colleagues from his seat at the Lusail Stadium, according to an eyewitness account.

But Eric Wahl believes foul play from the Qatari government may have been involved in his brother’s untimely death and said so in an Instagram post hours after his brother died.

By Saturday morning, Eric Wahl’s entire Instagram, including the video with the shocking proclamation, had been made private, meaning only followers of Eric Wahl’s account could see it.

Grant had been detained by Qatari authorities for wearing a rainbow t-shirt at the beginning of the World Cup and was not shy about denouncing the Middle Eastern country’s policies against LGBTQ residents as well as migrant workers, prompting some to question his death.

In his Instagram post, Eric said his brother had received death threats after wearing the rainbow shirt to a match.

“My name is Eric Wahl. I live in Seattle, Washington. I am Grant Wahl’s brother. I’m gay,” he said in a video posted to his Instagram account before the account was removed. “I’m the reason he wore the rainbow shirt to the World Cup. My brother was healthy. He told me he received death threats. I do not believe my brother just died. I believe he was killed. And I just beg for any help”

Eric Wahl could not immediately be reached for comment by The Post.

Wahl told a podcast on Thursday his body “finally collapsed on me.” He had been twice to a medical clinic and was told that he was suffering from bronchitis, according to reports.

The same day, the veteran soccer reporter criticized a Qatari official for his response to the death of a Filipino migrant worker at a resort used by the Saudi Arabian soccer team for training purposes.

“They just don’t care,” wrote Wahl in his December 8 substack column. “The Supreme Committee in charge of Qatar’s World Cup doesn’t care that a Filipino migrant worker died at Saudi Arabia’s training resort during the group stage. He suffered a fatal blow to the head during a fall in a forklift accident (information that was kept under wraps until being broken by The Athletic’s Adam Crafton).”

Wahl was responding to a news conference in which Nasser Al-Khater, the chief executive of the Qatar World Cup, addressed the death of the worker.

“We’re in the middle of a World Cup, and we have a successful World Cup. And this is something that you want to talk about right now?” Al-Khater said when asked about the worker’s death. “I mean, death is a natural part of life, whether it’s at work, whether it’s in your sleep. Of course, a worker died. Our condolences go to his family. However, it’s strange that this is something that you wanted to focus on as your first question.”

Qatar has been widely criticized over its treatment of migrant labor, used to build stadiums and other infrastructure. More than 6,500 migrant laborers have died in the country since the World Cup was awarded to Qatar in 2010, according to reports.
