#Gov. Phil Murphy blasts revelers at 700-person NJ house party

Folks who attended a 700-person house party in New Jersey over the weekend belong in the “Knucklehead Hall of Fame,” Gov. Phil Murphy said Wednesday.

The bash at a Jackson Township mansion rented via Airbnb on Sunday night is partly behind the Garden State’s recent spike in positive coronavirus test result, the governor said at a news briefing.

“Yes, it’s hot. Yes, it’s summer. Yes, we all want — and in many cases, need — to blow off some steam,” Murphy said.

“But, this is no time for anyone to be vying for induction into the Knucklehead Hall of Fame.”

Over the last four days, roughly 2,000 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in New Jersey — causing the state to pause the reopening of certain indoor activities, such as dining and gyms, the governor said.

“I’m not going to say that indoor dining is like a house party, but when one party in an air-conditioned house leads to dozens of new cases, it should give us all pause.”

Murphy cited other coronavirus clusters stemming from a fiesta at a Middletown house that infected 50 teens and a gathering of lifeguards.

“When there are hundreds of people crammed into a house, where the air-conditioning system is simply blowing the air around, and where people are not wearing masks, you have also invited coronavirus to your party,” Murphy said.

There was also a Cape May County graduation party that infected at least 46 people, a similar event in Westfield that resulted in 17 cases, a Long Beach Island bash that caused 35 lifeguards to get sick and a Father’s Day fete in Essex County that was traced to three cases, according to NJ.com.

State Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said the rate of people between the ages of 18 and 29 testing positive for the virus is climbing from 12% in April and 22% in June to up to 33% this month.

The Garden State hadn’t had a day with more than 500 cases in July until Saturday, when 555 were recorded, followed by 512 on Sunday, 446 Monday and 565 Tuesday, the outlet reported.

New Jersey reported 489 new cases Wednesday, bringing the statewide cumulative total to 180,766.

“We are now back, plus or minus, to where we were roughly a month ago in the daily numbers of new cases,” Murphy said.
