#Gov. Cuomo warns of ‘longer commutes’ in post-Labor Day New York

New York traffic jams are coming out of lockdown.

Big Apple traffic — still subdued amid the COVID-19 pandemic — is likely to pick up now that Labor Day has passed, Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned on Tuesday.

“Labor Day starts a different phase. People start to get back to work. Schools are opening. Activity is increasing,” Cuomo said at a press conference at his Manhattan office.

“You see traffic starting to increase, which we’re seeing now. More road traffic than ridership in public transportation,” the governor said.

Cuomo said the increased aversion to transit was “to be expected,” but unfortunate.

“People feel more comfortable being in their car to commute than getting on public transportation and being in an environment with other people,” he said.

“We’ll see more traffic on the roads, longer commutes.”

While traffic volumes remained below pre-pandemic levels throughout the summer, they’ve rebounded much faster than public transit ridership, which remains around 75 percent what it was in February.
