#Gov. Cuomo to decide on school reopening date in August

The decision on whether New York schools will reopen in September will come the first week in August, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday — as he ripped President Trump for threatening to cut funding for districts that don’t reopen in the fall.

The governor laid out a timeline as to how the state will determine when schools in some 700 districts, including New York City, will resume.

The state will provide guidance on reopening next Monday. Then, local districts must submit reopening plans by July 31.

“August 1 to 7, the state will announce a decision on whether or not those schools open,” Cuomo told reporters at his Manhattan office. “We’ll look at the data in the first week and we’ll make a decision.”

He wouldn’t say whether the decision will be a “global” one or made on an individual basis.

Cuomo also addressed Trump’s tweet from Wednesday morning that threatened to yank funding to districts that don’t open in September.

“Threaten me, threaten me. It’s not the first time,” the governor said.

He said the federal government has no legal authority in determining when schools reopen.

“It’s not legal, it’s not constitutional,” Cuomo added. “And you’re not going to bully New Yorkers. That’s not going to happen.”

Ahead of Cuomo’s press conference Wednesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza announced plans to reopen the city’s schools in September on a two- and three-day rotating schedule. Families will also have the option of remote learning five days a week.

Cuomo said that plan will have to be submitted to the state for approval.
