Boston Celtics star Gordon Hayward suffered a Grade 3 sprain of his right ankle in Monday’s Game 1 win over the Philadelphia 76ers and is expected to be out for four weeks.

While attempting to box out Sixers big-man Joel Embiid with roughly 3 ½ minutes left in the fourth quarter, Hayward’s right foot got twisted and he fell to the floor instantly. Hayward, who scored 12 points on 5-for-13 shooting with four steals in the win, took a bit to get up before slowly limping to Boston’s locker room.

It’s Hayward’s second significant ankle injury after he fractured his tibia and dislocated his ankle in a gruesome scene during the Celtics’ regular-season opener in 2017. He was later ruled out for the rest of the season and ended up needing two surgeries. His most recent sprain is on the opposite ankle.

In November 2019, Hayward fractured his left hand and was out for a month.

Hayward’s absence could be a significant blow to Boston and their already tight rotation. The 30-year-old averaged 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists while shooting 50% from the field this season.

With Hayward out, Marcus Smart will likely step into the starting lineup.
