Two House Republicans have requested Attorney General William Barr’s opinion as to whether Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) violated federal law when she ripped up her copy of President Trump’s State of the Union address back in February.

Policy Committee Chairman Gary Palmer, of Alabama, and Study Committee Chairman Mike Johnson, of Louisiana, penned their request to Barr on Tuesday.

“Nancy Pelosi’s famous tantrum on the House floor was more than disgraceful; she violated her responsibility to preserve official documents delivered to the House of Representatives,” Palmer said in a statement to Fox News.

Pelosi tore apart her copy of the speech as soon as Trump concluded his remarks. The speaker stood by her actions afterward, saying “it was the courteous thing to do considering the alternatives.”

She issued a statement slamming the speech as untruthful.

“The manifesto of mistruths presented in page after page of the address tonight should be a call to action for everyone who expects truth from the President and policies worthy of his office and the American people,” Pelosi said at the time.

The lawmakers are questioning whether Pelosi might have violated a federal law that carries a penalty ranging in severity between a fine and up to three years in prison.

Pelosi was holding a copy of Trump’s remarks to Congress, which are safely stored with others in the Congressional Record.
