In a tweet Tuesday, the Long Island Republican accused de Blasio of “destroying our great city from the inside out.”
“New York City will not make it through the remainder of his term,” Zeldin wrote. “He needs to be immediately removed from office to save the city and protect the people who live there!”
Zeldin, who represents the 1st Congressional District, which encompasses Suffolk County, doubled down on his demand Wednesday.
“Homicides, shootings & other crimes continue spiking in NYC,” he tweeted. “Quality of life is taking a beating, cops are being thrown under the bus, & the radical left is in charge & destroying the city. DeBlasio must be removed immediately. The city won’t make it through the rest of his term.”
The Big Apple saw 205 shootings in June — the most for that month since 1996.
Zeldin’s tweets — which echo those from President Trump criticizing de Blasio’s handling of the recent crime spree and support of police reform — come on the heels of a bloody July 4th weekend, when 49 people were shot, 11 fatally.
De Blasio has since failed to provide a concrete plan for how to combat the scourge of violence. Hizzoner has instead butted heads with the NYPD over the causes of the spike in gun violence.
City Hall spokeswoman Freddi Goldstein shot back at Zeldin’s remarks.
“The Representative may have missed this, considering he doesn’t live in New York City, but the Mayor and the NYPD drove crime to record lows during his time in office — and that’s what they’ll do again,” she said.
