#Giovanni Mosconi, famed NYC restaurateur, dead at 85

Giovanni Mosconi, a well-known Greenwich Village restaurateur, died June 1 after a short illness. He was 85.

Mosconi, of Bay Ridge, was born in the northern mountainous region of Piacenza, Italy, and served in the Italian Army stationed at Lake Como. In his 20s, he moved to London, where he met his future wife and became a noted restaurateur.

The eldest of seven siblings, Mosconi owned and operated with his brother and sisters Monte’s Trattoria and Villa Mosconi, two West Village hotspots that were frequented by celebrities and Mosconi’s beloved New York Yankees for more than a generation.

He was the father of four children, including former Post reporter Angela Mosconi. His wife of 37 years, Lucia, predeceased him.

Mosconi is survived by four children; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his six siblings, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.

Viewing will be June 8 from 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m at McLaughlin & Sons Funeral Home in Bay Ridge. The funeral mass, at noon on June 9 at St. Anselm’s Church in Brooklyn, will be celebrated by Monsignor David Cassato.

Mosconi will be be buried in London alongside his wife.
