The Giants lost another potential starter Wednesday, as cornerback Sam Beal has opted-out of the 2020 season, according to the league’s transaction wire.

Despite annual promise and expectations, the 23-year-old Beal has played just six games in two years since the Giants took him with their third-round pick in the 2018 Supplemental Draft due to various injuries.

But with the Giants already thin at cornerback, Beal likely would have battled to start at cornerback across the recently signed James Bradberry. The team is without 2019 first round pick DeAndre Baker, who was placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List and is facing four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault stemming from a May 13 incident.

Beal is the third Giant to opt out, following tackle Nate Solder and receiver Da’Mari Scott. Solder has started all 32 games at left tackle since arriving to the Giants in 2018.

NFL players have until Thursday at 4 p.m. to opt-out. After that deadline, the opt-out rules become extremely restrictive.
