The Giants hope Graham Gano can follow in the footsteps of Lawrence Tynes.
Gano, 33, is undergoing COVID-19 testing protocols required of all free agents and if all goes well and he passes his physical, he is expected to sign with the Giants. Gano would join Chandler Catanzaro on the roster, as the Giants look to find a replacement for Aldrick Rosas, their kicker the past three seasons. Rosas was released after being charged with three misdemeanors stemming from a hit-and-run accident in California last month.
Tynes provided the winning points with his right leg in the NFC championship games following the 2007 and 2011 seasons. Gano, like Tynes born in Scotland, has an impressive résumé. He has hit 82.1 percent of his career field goals (224 of 273) and gained a share of the all-time record when he drilled a 63-yard field goal October 7, 2018, to beat the Giants 33-31.
Why is Gano available? He finished the last two seasons on injured reserve. A fractured left leg ended his 2018 season prematurely and he underwent knee surgery in 2019, spending the entire season on injured reserve. This summer, the Panthers went with Joe Elye, releasing Gano on July 30. The physical exam will be critical for Gano to show the Giants he is healthy.
After parting ways with Rosas, the Giants quickly signed Catanzaro, who had retired after leaving the Jets last summer after a rough preseason. Gano is the more accomplished kicker, with success with Washington and Carolina in his 11-year NFL career. Gano made the Pro Bowl in 2017 after connecting on 34 of 37 field goal attempts. He has hit 95.3 percent of his extra points.
The Giants waived Cody Wright. The former Michigan State receiver was signed on Tuesday.
