The Giants sent their first player into quarantine.

Wide receiver David Sills was placed on the newly created reserve/COVID-19 list, according to Tuesday’s NFL transaction wire. Under the terms of the designation, Sills either tested positive or came in close contact with someone who tested positive. Teams are prohibited from specifying.

Sills spent most of last season on the Giants practice squad, with a December call-up to the active roster but no game action. It is not known how long a player must stay on the reserve/COVID-19 list or what requirements must be met before removal.

Veteran players reported to training camp for testing and virtual meetings Tuesday. They need three negative tests before they can enter the team facility, undergo physicals and collect equipment. The next rounds of testing are set for Wednesday and Friday.

Sills reported Thursday with rookies, some quarterbacks and select injured players. He should have been tested at least twice by now.

Sills is competing to be the Giants’ No. 4 wide receiver, along with Corey Coleman and a host of others.

While Coleman is trying to salvage his career as a former first-round pick of the Browns, Sills is most famous for committing to USC and then-coach Lane Kiffin as a quarterback in the seventh grade. He played receiver at West Virginia but went undrafted.

At 6-foot-4, Sills offers a size element needed in the Giants’ receiving corps.

The Giants claimed cornerback Shakial Taylor off waivers from the Broncos. He played in five games for the Colts as an undrafted rookie last season. Cornerback DeAndre Baker is on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, pending his appeal.

Quarterback Alex Tanney was placed on the non-football illness list, while rookie linebacker Tae Crowder was placed on the non-football injury list. Both count against the 90-man roster limit.
