#Giants dumping Alex Tanney as part of roster cuts

Alex Tanney was a roster survivor in his two years with the Giants, emerging as someone former head coach Pat Shurmur came to know and trust.

Shurmur is gone, and so, too, is Tanney.

The 32-year old career backup quarterback was one of the Giants cuts on Saturday. The Giants have Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback and signed veteran Colt McCoy as the experienced backup. Tanney this summer was involved in a battle with Cooper Rush, a 26-year old with familiarity with the offense of new coordinator Jason Garrett from their time together with the Cowboys.

Tanney bounced around several NFL teams during the course of an eight-year career spent mostly on practice squads. He completed 11 of 15 passes, with one touchdown, in his only appearance in 2015 for the Titans. Tanney was Eli Manning’s backup in 2018 but did not throw a pass that season. Tanney in two years with the Giants appeared in one game and threw one pass. He is best known for coming in to replace Manning in Manning’s final appearance for the Giants, December 15, 2019 in a victory over the Dolphins.

The Giants will get down to the 53-man roster limit by Saturday at 4 p.m.
