Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this sun of York, because a new key visual and the main staff have been revealed for Requiem of the Rose King (known in Japan as Baraou no Souretsu), an upcoming adaptation based on the historical romance manga by Aya Kanno that re-imagines the villainous monarch as an intersex individual. The main staff includes:

  • Original work: Aya Kanno (serialized in Akita Shoten’s Monthly Princess magazine)
  • Director: Kentarou Suzuki
  • Series composition, screenplay: Hiroki Uchida
  • Character design: Tsutomu Hashizume
  • Animation production: J.C. Staff

A new key visual for the upcoming Requiem of the Rose King TV anime, featuring a close-up of the main character, Richard, an intersex man. Richard is slender with pale skin, black hair, and heterochromatic eyes (one purple, one yellow). He holds a purple rose bloom up to his face and smiles eerily.

An English language version of the Requiem of the Rose King manga is published in the United States by Viz Media, who describe the story of the series as follows:

Richard, the ambitious third son of the House of York, believes he is cursed, damned from birth to eternal darkness. But is it truly fate that sets him on the path to personal destruction? Or his own tormented longings? Based on an early draft of Shakespeare’s Richard III, Aya Kanno’s dark fantasy finds the man who could be king standing between worlds, between classes, between good and evil.

The Requiem of the Rose King TV anime is scheduled to begin broadcasting during the fall season of 2021.
