While some Sabres fans turned to Twitter on June 16 in the wake of Jason Botterill’s firing as general manager, others have looked to other avenues to express their feelings about the team.

Enter singer-songwriter Melody Martin, a 25-year-old Buffalo native who regularly shares Sabres-inspired songs on YouTube, where she has over 9,300 subscribers.

“When I started YouTube, my whole plan was kind of for it to be a pathway to potentially a career in songwriting, cause that’s kind of what I always wanted to do,” Martin recently told The Post. “But now more recently, I think people are really kind of starting to pay attention to what I have to say about sports.”

Martin’s worlds of music and sports collided in 2018, when she dropped her first music video about Rasmus Dahlin, the Sabres first-overall pick of the draft that year. Set to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” Martin said the idea came to be after a casual suggestion online.

“The first-ever song I did, I got the idea from someone on the internet,” Martin said. “I think someone casually just mentioned, someone should put Rasmus Dahlin’s name to the song ‘Jolene’ by Dolly Parton. And I had never really done anything like that before, but I’d been a songwriter for years so I was like, ‘I can do that.’”

In the months that followed, Martin released a series of videos centered on Buffalo teams, recently taking aim the Sabres’ playoff drought with a Taylor Swift-esque parody, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back to the Playoffs.” Following recent events, however, Martin has decided to forgo a cover based on Botterill’s axing.

“A lot of people have been asking me about that, I decided not to. I would feel bad,” Martin said, noting owner Terry Pegula is potentially fair game.

“No one’s really happy with the owners right now, no one’s happy with the Pegulas, so the Pegulas might be getting a song soon,” she added.

With new GM Kevyn Adams now at the helm, Martin has one suggestion.

“I would probably just tell him, probably tune out all the noise because it can get pretty negative here in Buffalo,” she said.
