The Alabama FedEx driver who allegedly dumped hundreds of packages into a ravine was expected to turn himself in, Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon said.

The suspect, 22-year-old Deandre Rayshaun Charleston, “admitted to everything,” Moon announced at a news conference.

Charleston allegedly confessed to dumping scores of packages worth a total of nearly $40,000 in the ditch, during five different incidents from Nov. 17 to Nov. 23. According to Moon, Charleston said he was distraught over a death in his family and other personal issues.

“He told our investigator he didn’t take anything, he just unloaded them because he didn’t want to deliver them,” Moon said.

“He was very upfront and it appeared that he was very sorrowful for what he’d done and just admitted he was having some hard times in his life and just made some poor choices,” the sheriff said. “It’s one of those situations where you hate it for the young man, because he did seem very respectful, very polite.”

Nearly 400 packages were found in the ravine, located on private property near Hayden, Alabama, AL.com reported. While some were able to be matched to their intended recipient, about 247 boxes, valued at a total of $25,000, were unidentifiable, according to the outlet.

Charleston was fired by FedEx a day after the discovery was made, WVTM 13 reported.
He was “delivering packages for another company” on Friday, Moon said, but would be taken into custody afterward on five Class D felony warrants for cargo theft.

“I hope this is a life lesson that can change him, give him a better work ethic, a better understanding of other people’s needs, so he can move on from this and become a thriving citizen in our state,” Moon added.
