The 2021 Sapporo Snow Festival, which was scheduled to be a smaller version of the annual event, is now canceled due to the record number of new coronavirus cases in the Northern island of Hokkaido and the whole of Japan. The February event usually brings around 2 million people to Hokkaido to see the large sculptures based on anime, manga, Japanese pop culture, and the world at large.

Instead, the operating committee behind the Sapporo Snow Festival will be looking to the past and putting up historical information, images, and photos online in celebration of the event. They will also be using the downtown space to show videos of past festivals on electronic billboards.

Sapporo has been on level 4 measures against COVID-19 for the past few weeks when cases started to rise again in the city. Japan recorded over 3,000 new COVID cases on December 12. The Japanese government today ordered the suspension of the Go To Travel campaign from December 28 to January 11, which covers the New Year's period – usually a high travel period for residences in Japan.
