#Florida sheriff’s deputy killed in crash just one shift before retirement

A sheriff’s deputy in Florida was killed in a crash Monday, just one shift before he planned to retire.

Corporal Brian LaVigne, 54, a 30-year veteran of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department, was responding to a report of a disturbance, officials said.

According to Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, 28-year old Travis Garrett was naked and throwing cookies at his neighbors from outside of his apartment.

After fleeing from deputies in his car, Garrett sped “as fast as he could make that car go” onto nearby Lumsden Road—and “intentionally” struck the driver’s side of LaVigne’s cruiser, Chronister said.

LaVigne was unresponsive at the scene. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

He is survived by a wife and two daughters.
